HTML IMG vs ASP:IMAGE performance

If there's no need to have a server control, then just use a <img> tag (prim
arily
for simplicity, even though it is faster but it's negligible). If you are
using a server control there's essentially no difference between the HtmlCon

HTML Image Control (and VB vs JavaScript)

I'm a VB programmer, somewhat new to VB.Net, and completely new to (and clueless with) ASP.Net

I'm trying to build a simple game as a programming exercise. I have HTML Image Controls in place, but when I look at the code behind, there doesnt seem to be an OnClick event. How can I add one ?

Also, it seems possible to add a client side OnClick event from HTML View. But everytime I try it, Visual Studio wants JavaScript. This seems pointless to me, at best I can fumble my way through JavaScript, but as a VB programmer, what i WANT to do is write this in VB. There has to be a way to change the language to VB, right ?

BTW, I notice in some language drop downs (that I dont yet know how to use) there is "vb" and "visualbasic". What's that all about ?

Thanks, (a very frustrated) AARRGGHHH> I have HTML Image Controls in place, but when I look at the code behind, there doesnt seem to be an OnClick event. How can I add one ?

Change your HTML Image controls intoImage Buttons, which do indeed expose an onClick event.

> There has to be a way to change the (Javascript) language to VB, right ?

Wrong. Javascript works with the HTML's document model. It is client-side script. For example, using Javascript you can bounce an image of a ball around the screen. Such client-side operations are meaningless to a server-side language such as VB.NET.

For example, if you're making an internet game, you'd really want use as much Javascript as possible. If every "gamer action" causes the page to return to the server, it will be a slow game indeed.

> BTW, I notice in some language drop downs (that I dont yet know how to use) there is "vb" and "visualbasic". What's that all about ?

No idea. There's a few "flavours" of Visual Basic ... so, the dropdown options could mean anything.

As you're new to ASP.NET, you might like to work through theQuickStart Tutorials, as they have been specifically designed to teach you the fundamentals.

I hope this helps.
> Change your HTML Image controls into Image Buttons, which do indeed expose an onClick event.

Thanks for the suggestion, that seems to be working out well.

>> There has to be a way to change the (Javascript) language to VB, right ?

>Wrong. Javascript works with the HTML's document model. It is client-side script.

In that case, I'm guessing I can probably at least use VBScript for client side issues, correct ? Do I just change the language attribute to "VBScript" ?

> For example, if you're making an internet game, you'd really want use as much Javascript as possible. If every "gamer action" causes the page to return to the server, it will be a slow game indeed.

It's not an action game, just a simple question and answer game, so server side should work out fine.

Thanks again for your help
> I'm guessing I can probably at least use VBScript for client side issues, correct?

You could, but you shouldn't. Read:Good or Evil? VBScript on the client side.

Javascript is the way to go. In your case, with a question and answer game, there's probably little if any client-side scripting necessary.

Understanding Javascript is anextremely valuable skill for anyone creating websites or web applications.

I hope this helps.

HTML Grid Layout Panel - should this control be used?

I am fairly new to ASP.NET. All the ASP.NET books I'm reading specify that web forms should be designed in Flow Layout mode rather than Grid Layout mode. I'm doing this with all my pages and for the most part everything is working fine.

There are some areas on my web pages, however, where I would like to have a little more control on control placement (rather than using a whole lot of tables to control positioning). The HTML Grid Layout Panel control seems well suited for this. My question is, are there any reasons why this control should be avoided (e.g. is it similar to using the Grid Layout mode for web pages which, apparently, should be avoided)? I don't want to run into a situation where I do a lot of work with HTML Grid Layout Panels, only to discover there are issues or browser compatibility problems.

Thanks!

Html for control

Hi,

Is it possible to get the html for a control? ie. return to a string what
the RenderControl method would output.

Thanks

DonalIf it's your own control you should be able to get it from within the render
event.
If it's not your control then you should be able to call the RenderControl
method of the control to get its output.

HTML file from database to user interface

Here is some sample/psuedo code. This should give you a good idea of
how to implement this.

<%@dotnet.itags.org. Control ClassName="DataBaseHtmlLiteral" %>

<script runat="server">
Public DataBaseID as integer

Sub OnPreRender
' create sql connection and command
SqlCmd = "Select TOP 1 [Table].[html] from [Table] WHERE [Table].
[IDField] = @dotnet.itags.org.ID"
SqlCmd.Parameters.add("@dotnet.itags.org.ID",DatabaseID)

HTML.Text = DirectCast(SqlCmd.ExecuteScalar(),String)
' clean up (close connection etc.)
End Sub
</script>

<asp:Literal ID="HTML" runat="server" />

Each instance requires the DataBaseID to be set.
This assumes a single instance of the html, if you are looping through
the table, do not use this. Don't want
Also, error catching is needed (row doesn't exist, column is null,
DataBaseID is null, etc)

Hope this helps!

HTML encoding label component - best practice?

Just written a quick little custom control, decended from Label, with an
extract bool property NeedHtmlEncode, that will automatically HTML encode
the Text property.

In the Render method, I can't just use HttpUtility.HtmlEncode(Text) because
it won't deal with fonts, bold etc etc. So I wrote the following bodge to
set the Text property with the encoded value, render as normal, then reset
Text back to it's original value.

I'm sure there is a better way, can anyone help?

Thanks,

John

protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter output)
{
if (needHtmlEncode)
{
string s = Text;
try
{
Text = System.Web.HttpUtility.HtmlEncode(Text);
base.Render(output);
}
finally
{
Text = s;
}
}
else
// normal, without encoding
base.Render(output);
}

html encoding dynamic link?

Hi,

don't know if this is the right category, but I think the question is pretty simple.

I've got a web user control wich contains an image tag. When the control loads, I want to set the ImageUrl property to something like this:
"~/WUC/ShowLogo.aspx?id=" + PartnerID + @dotnet.itags.org."&sz=" + Size

This page just takes the id and the given size and outputs a thumbnail from an image in the database.
Now the image doesn't show up. When I check the source of the rendered html page I see this:

<img id="ctl00_cph_pcMain_imgLogo" src="http://pics.10026.com/?src=WUC/ShowLogo.aspx?id=1&sz=75" style="border-width:0px;"/
pretty obvious where everything goes wrong.. It encodes the & tot & wich is not really a valid url..

My question: How do I stop the component, or prolly the page the component is on, from encoding the url?

Not sure what goes worng, it shouldn't encode it by default behaviour.

imgLogo.ImageURL = "/WUC/ShowLogo.aspx?id=" + PartnerID + "&sz=" + Size;

should work fine.
Can you show us the piece of code where you set the imageURL property ?

you're right, it shouldn't encode, I have no freaking idea why it won't..

code behind:

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
imgLogo.ImageUrl = "~/WUC/ShowLogo.aspx?id=" + PartnerID + "&sz=" + Size;
lblTitle.Text = Title;
lnkInfo.NavigateUrl = @."~/Info.aspx?id=" + PartnerID;
}

page:

<table>
<tr>
<td><asp:Image runat="server" ID="imgLogo" /></td>
<td>
<asp:Label runat="server" ID="lblTitle" />
<br />
<asp:HyperLink runat="server" ID="lnkInfo">meer <asp:Image runat="server" ID="imgArrow" ImageUrl="~/media/images/doublearrow.gif" /></asp:HyperLink>
</td>
</tr>
</table
anyone got a clue?

HTML Elements and Web Control Elements ...

hi all, I am a little confused about when to use html/web controls elemetns in my asp.net pages. Like this example, if I am using textbox1.text = cstr(session("emailAddress")) ... it works fine ... but, if the text box is an html element, I can't assign the session data to the text box by writing: request.form("EmailAddress") = cstr(session("emailAddress")) ... it will have error saying: Collection is for read-only :( I am trying to passed a session data to another page and display it in an html textbox ... how can I do that? And, if html elements also can display session data as well as web controls elements, what is the purpose of including two contols in asp.net web matrix?? Need help and advice .. thank you.

my email page code looks like this:-
===========================

Sub Page_load(Sender as Object, E as EventArgs)

textbox1.text = cstr(session("emailAddress")) 'this works fine

request.form("EmailAddress") = cstr(session("emailAddress")) 'not working :(

If request.form("EmailAddress") = "" Then
dim strResponse as string = "<h2>Send Email using ASP.NET formatted in HTML</h2>"
lblMessage.Text = strResponse
Else
dim strResponse as string = "You just sent an email message formatted in HTML to:<h2>" & request("EmailAddress") & "</h2>"
lblMessage.Text = strResponse
End If

End Sub

Sub btn_Click(sender as Object, e as System.EventArgs)

If request.form("EmailAddress") <> ""
Dim mail As New MailMessage
mail.From = "email@dotnet.itags.org.yahoo.com"
mail.To = request.form("EmailAddress")
mail.Subject = "Message sent using ASP.NET and CDONTS"
mail.Body = "HTML Message sent from ASPFree.com using ASP.NET and Cdonts" & "<a href=http://aspfree.com/aspnet/email.aspx>Wonder how this is done?</a>" & "<a href=http://aspfree.com/aspnet/setupcdonts.aspx>Wonder How to setup CDONTS?</a>"
mail.BodyFormat = MailFormat.Html
SmtpMail.SmtpServer = "19.204.22.166"
SmtpMail.Send(mail)
End If
End Sub

you can set an html textbox value the same way you did in ASP.

<input type="textbox" value="<%=Session("emailaddress")%"
the server controls give you a great deal of flexibility when building a web page. The code behind makes programming a web page more like programming a windows form. each server control does have overhead however, so if you dont need the extra functionality provided by making the control a runat=server, then you should stick to regular HTML elements.

Hi Param,
I also think FreeTextBox is a good candidate and I've ever used it in some
web programs. Also, it's not only popular in ASP/ASP.NET app, also has JAVA
version, so I think it's browser compatibility should be ok. In addition, I
think you can also have a look at the www.asp.net or sourceforge site to
see whether there're any other good DTHML edit.

Thanks,

HTML Data generated by Server.Controls

hi guys!
i've got very interesting problem. it is like this.
is it possible to get HTML generated by the server control in code
behind?

i'm developing an asp.net web application where i need to fectch data
in HTML format. The data is rendered by the Data Repeater in Table
format on webpage.

is there any way i can get reder data of data repeater from itself? i
mean is there any method of anyway to get html data from HTML Control?
like GetHTML() or any properties or work around?

i tried with RenderControl() method but i failed.

the HTML Render Data generated by the Data Repeater is this :
<Table>
<tr>
<th>Col1</th>
<th>Col2</th>
<th>Col3</th>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Col1</td>
<td>Col2</td>
<td>Col3</td>
</tr>
</Table>

i want this data in code behind.

if anyone know please let me know.

html controls datalist

Is it possible to do the following:
In a datalist place an HTML hidden control like such..
<input type="hidden" id="hiddenctl"
value='<%#Databinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "dbfield")%>'>
Then on the DataListItemCommand retrieve the value of that control using the
findcontrol method or something similar?
ObjectType myhiddenfield = (ObjectType)e.Item.FindControl("hiddenctl");
string thevalue = myhiddenfield.Text;
This simple task has turned into a nightmare simply because I need to pass
several variables from a datalist command to the method using Postback.
Thanks
e.Item.FindYes, it is possible. It goes like this:
<input type=hidden id="hiddenctl" value='<%# ... %>' runat=server>
In the server-side event handler for ItemCommand:
HtmlInputHidden c = (HtmlInputHidden) e.Item.FindControl ("hiddenctl");
string thevalue = c.Value;
Hope this helps.

HTML Controls and User controls

I have a user control that is basically a login dialogue.
If I add the user control to webpage1, can I access the
properties directly from C# codebehind, or do I have to
access the properties from HTML behind webpage1.

Thanks in advance. PeteWebpage1 is a standard ASP.NET webform which contains the
user control. I know I can access properties of the user
control via the HTML of webpage1 i.e.
<uc1:LoginUserControl id="LoginUserControl1"
property1="Hello" property2="Goodbye"
runat="server"></uc1:LoginUserControl
but is it possible to access the properties from webpage1
code behind page.

Hope this is a little clearer.
Pete.

Yes It is possible. Here is the code to do it.

Dim _myControl As Control = Page.FindControl("UserControlName")
Dim _myControlType As Type = _myControl.GetType()
Dim _myControl_Property As PropertyInfo =
_myControlType.GetProperty("PROPERTYNAME")

sTemp = _myControl_Property.GetValue(_myControl, Nothing)

Hope this helps.

Your CodeBehind Page should have a reference to the control if you used the
tag you mentioned in your reply. You can therefore access the properties of
the object in your CodeBehind (using its' ID) without any problem.

Sorry trinitypete,

I misunderstood your question, and neglected to observe that you were
talking about a User Control instead of a Server Control. Handling the User
Control from your CodeBehind is a bit trickier than a Server Control. The
following MSDN article should help:

HTML control Vs Web form control

Hi,

I am new to asp.net. I want to know that, HTML and Web form control can work
in same way example, using "runat = Server" attribute, html control can also
executed at server, then what is the use of HTML control and is there is any
specific condition when we use only HTML control or web form control.

Thanks and regards,

Html controls are lighter. One of typical scenarios where you may want to
use html controls is when you have an html prototype of your page and you
need to program it in asp.net. Then it is easier just to add runat=server to
html controls.

Web controls offer common set of server-side members that can make your code
cleaner and more readable.

When the user presses my Server control button to clear the screen, I would like to clear the hidden text field as well. The below doesn't work.

Private Sub btnClear_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnClear.Click

hdnFPrintNA.Text = ""

End Sub

I have been searching this site to try and find the answer but I am only getting confused. Can any one point me in the right direction and tell me how to solve this problem?

ThanksI think it should read

hdnFPrintNA.value =""
Try using "hdnFPrintNA.Value" instead. And also remember to define your Html Control as:

'System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlInputHidden'
Thank you both for your help. It works now. :)
